A Win for Students, Educators, and Common Sense
Today marks an important step forward in LCNA’s ongoing fight for Ohio’s students and educators. In a decision issued by the Tenth District Court of Appeals of Ohio, the court affirmed LCNA’s standing in its lawsuit against Ohio’s unconstitutional literacy mandate, reversing the earlier dismissal and allowing the case to move forward.
This decision ensures that LCNA can continue challenging the unconstitutional literacy mandates that have had real consequences in classrooms across the state. As outlined in the case, the law has already limited educators’ ability to support students effectively, disrupted professional learning, and undermined LCNA’s mission to ensure every child becomes a confident, capable reader and writer.
Since the literacy mandate’s enactment in 2023, which was heavily contested by educators and researchers, Ohio reading scores have declined, and the mandates have restricted teachers’ ability to use research-based interventions that meet the needs of struggling readers. The bill also eroded local control, taking decision-making power away from schools and communities working to choose the best literacy curriculum for their students.
With standing secured, LCNA will continue advocating for evidence-based interventions for the students who need it most, professional expertise, and the right of educators to meet students where they are. Today’s decision keeps that work alive and shifts the focus to securing a literate future for every Ohio student.
