Reading Intervention

About Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a 12-20 week evidence-based intervention that helps struggling readers catch up to their peers. Led by specially trained teachers who received extensive professional development, Reading Recovery is designed for one-on-one lessons tailored to meet the student’s individual needs and interests.

Literacy Lessons

Literacy Lessons is designed to reach young children in grades 1-4 in special education or ESL settings who are struggling with beginning reading and writing but are not eligible for Reading Recovery.

About Student Assessment

An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement (Clay, 2016) provides a systematic way of capturing early reading and writing behaviors and is the primary assessment tool used in Reading Recovery. Widely used by classroom teachers and researchers, the Observation Survey measures students on 6 different factors of literacy.

Each child in Reading Recovery is assessed using the Observation Survey before entering the intervention, when leaving the intervention, and at the end of the school year. Reading Recovery teachers receive extensive training in the administration, scoring, and interpretation of the Observation Survey.

The National Center of Intensive Intervention has evaluated the Observation Survey as having convincing evidence of effectiveness in its Academic Screening Tools Chart. Learn more about the Observation Survey.
