A New Name, A Shared Vision: Introducing the Literacy Council of North America

For more than four decades, the Reading Recovery Council of North America has been a trusted voice in early literacy, grounded in literacy processing theory and committed to doing #WhateverItTakes to help kids learn to read and write. Today, we are proud to announce a new name that reflects both our roots and our future: Literacy Council of North America (LCNA).

This change is more than symbolic — it reflects a growing, collective commitment to literacy that goes beyond a single intervention. Our membership now includes not just Reading Recovery teachers, but all interventionists, classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and administrators who collaborate to support each child’s literacy development.

Literacy is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. It is a dynamic, complex process that requires responsive teaching, thoughtful collaboration, and a shared belief in the potential of every learner. Our new name reflects this broader, more inclusive understanding of literacy — one that values the contributions of every educator and every role in the system.

Why the Change?

  • To reflect our collective strength: Literacy success is not the work of one program or one person. It is the result of coordinated, intentional efforts across roles and settings.
  • To embrace a broader definition of literacy: Today’s learners engage with texts in many forms — digital, visual, oral, and written. Our work must reflect this complexity.
  • To honor our foundation while moving forward: Our expanded identity enables us to support a broader range of people, practices, and partnerships.

As Dr. Marie Clay said:

“If a child is not learning the way you are teaching, then you must teach in the way the child learns.”

This philosophy is at the heart of our transformation. The Literacy Council of North America is a space where educators come together to learn, reflect, and lead — united by a belief in equity, early intervention, and the power of literacy to change lives.

What’s Next?

Over the next week, you’ll see a few changes, including an updated website at myliteracycouncil.org. As LCNA, we will continue to:

  • Provide high-quality professional learning grounded in research and responsive practice.
  • Advocate for effective and equitable literacy instruction.
  • Support a diverse community of educators committed to lifelong learning.
  • Celebrate the stories of literacy growth and resilience across North America.

We invite you to join us in this exciting new chapter. Together, we are stronger. Together, we are the Literacy Council of North America — a community committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident, capable reader and writer.
